The Training Workshop . . .
Our workshop is designed
to help participants take the first step in becoming professional
labor support providers. The workshop utilizes text and
supplementary literature, videos and role-play to build theoretical
knowledge and practical skills.
Required Background of Participants . . .
Childbirth
educators, nurses with labor and delivery experience, midwives or
midwifery students and those who have attended other doula workshops
and have the required background.
For the
participants lacking the appropriate background there are two
options.
- Part 1 is an
optional one day introduction to Childbirth seminar. It will be
held prior to the Labor Support Training Workshop.
- The participant
may also prepare by attending a complete series of childbirth
education classes. The series must include 12 or more hours of
instruction, the viewing of birth videos and a tour of a hospital.

DAY ONE . . .
Registration & Course Information:
Introduction and a brief overview of the course.
Introduction To Labor Support:
A Description of the research on the
significance of birth to a woman and a review of current research
pertaining to doula care.
Certification Options:
An overview of the certifying options
available to prospective doulas.
DAY TWO . . .
The Professional Of The Doula:
A discussion of the reality of being a doula,
including record-keeping, taxes, and the need for back-up.
Prenatal Contact:
A discussion regarding the dynamics of prenatal contact with
clients. The Ideal Birth
Exercise:
Allows participants a chance to think about their ideal birth and
how that might differ from a client's ideas.
Supporting A Woman In First Stage Labor
- Physical Aspects:
Participants will explore the changes in a woman's body during first
stage labor.
Supporting
A Woman In First Stage Labor - Comfort Measures:
A hands-on demonstration of various ways to
keep a woman comfortable in labor.
Supporting A Woman In First Stage Labor
- Emotional Aspects:
A discussion of the emotional aspects of first
stage labor.
DAY THREE . . .
Supporting A Woman In Second Stage
Labor:
A discussion of
pushing techniques an positions as well as episiotomy.
Roles & Responsibilities:
A scenario
involving participants role-playing the various roles in the labor
room. Variations In
Pregnancy And Labor:
An opportunity to
discuss hypothetical clinical challenges that may occur during
labor.
Cesarean Birth
And VBAC:
A chance for
participants to witness a cesarean by means of video; including a
discussion of the special needs of caesarean and VBAC women.
Special Situations - Loss And Abuse:
A discussion of the doula's role during the process of loss and the
needs of a sexual abuse survivor.
The New Family:
The participants will view healthy newborn slides and learn the role
in initiating breastfeeding.
Communication Skills:
A chance for the participants to practice effective listening
skills. Postpartum
Contact:
An overview of the postpartum period an a doula's roles and
responsibilities during this period.
Practice Of Skills:
A chance for participants to practice skills in a simulation of
labor.
